Vacation: First day and I never learn!

Yeah! It is finally summer vacation, and the first day of vacation was a long and beautiful day with the family at the beach, swimming and diving in the sea and just plain old relaxing in the sun.

Usually we go down by the sea, just 10-15 mins walk from our house, however, today we went out to Øksneset (Austrheim) which is an hours drive ++ from our place. Øksneset is a perfect place for kids as it has a small lagoon. On our way we stopped to buy the kids an inflatable rubber boat/dinghy. A really popular gift!

Finally at the lagoon, we were eager to get going with the swimming (especially the diving). My son and I just got ourselves some scuba gear, and we were both more than ready to try it out. So, on with the wetsuits, and out we went. My son and I were in the water, more or less, for three straight hours.

The day went on, and we really had a lot of fun, but as usual … I never learn! As I wore a wetsuit most of the day I considered myself fairly safe, so I did the obvious, I skipped sun block and got down to business (diving) forgetting the most obvious part of my body … my head! As I also have a short springsuit (half arms and legs) you can imagine that I also got sunburned on both legs and arms …

The summer moves on, and I just got the most out of day one! I am bald, but not so beautiful when sunburned!

Summertime, And the livin’ is easy …

Summertime is a time for joy and fun, and this weekend was a weekend like any other … a full schedule from early morning to early evenings (about 6 PM) the whole weekend. The Sunday was kind of planned long time ahead as we wanted to join the Children’s Hike team (Barnas Turlag) at Træet farm.

Træet Gård

Træet Gård

The old farm is situated in the middle on the Osterøy (island) and has been in the Norwegian Trekking Association’s (Den Norske Turistforening) possession for many years.

We left the house around 10 AM, and arrived at Træet at 1130 AM. Driving onto Osterøy we immediately took to the right following the old and winding roads to Bruvik. When I say long and winding I mean loooong and really wiiiinding. Arriving at Hesjedalsbotnen we took to the right and started on the 5 kilometer gravel road towards the farm. Stopping about 500 meters from the farm we walked the rest.

The day was filled with activities for the children as they were able to go fishing, paddling canoes, rowing a boat, go bug hunting (including a small baby snake), walk the slack ropes, go treasure hunting, swinging from the trees, play games and so on. Taking time for some barbecuing as well and the day was a perfect 7 hours end to a weekend with great weather and lots of fun for the kids.

Life at the Cabin: Second real taste of summer

Fishing for the first catch of the summer

Fishing for the first catch of the summer

Smiiiiiile!

Smiiiiiile!

A trip to the family cabin by the sea is always filled with great anticipation with the kids; anticipation of relaxing around the cabin and fishing with grandpa! This time being the first chance of the year to sit in the sun and enjoy fishing in the fjords is of course filled with extra excitement. So, the two eldest, mom and grandpa went out to capture the wild beasts of the deep blue … :)

First to capture a fish was our son, then our daughter, and then grandpa … mom? … she was the busy photographer taking these pictures.

The first barbeque and rubarb of the year is to many the first taste of summer of the year, so is the case for us as well. Today (May 30th) summer came to Bergen with its warm weather (20 °C +), and an opprtunity to have dinner outside … and of course a chance to wear shorts and t-shirt, which of course our kids loved the most ;)
