Autumn at the westernmost point of mainland Norway

IMG_0724_rYesterday was an incredible day! The sun was shining and the sky was blue. The plan for the day was to take a friend of ours out to the westernmost point of mainland Norway. A place called Vardetangen. The trip was also a chance for me to learn more about photography.

The day ended at my in law’s cabin. Before joining for dinner we went down to the shore to look at the marina and the boats, and to throw some stones … which ended up in me showing off my “amazing” stone skimming/skipping capabilities. Later that evening we got served a wonderful lamb fricassée (pardon my french) …

Pirate day!

O'Hoi Pirate!

Pirate day is a highly anticipated day which, when it comes closer, is a subject at every dinner table a week or two in advance. The day is no more than a day out by the shore with the kids, and some good old treasure hunting, but always a lot of fun. Also it is a chance for the kids to meet up with other kids, and pirates!

The day started off as usual … a bit stressful, and with plans for more than we could cope with. It just so happens that our fairly new car (approx. 2 years old) had decided the day before that something was wrong. We were told that it might be something we could fix by going for a long drive. Apparently it had something to do with a particle filter. Finally settling down with what we could manage an early Sunday morning without extending it to include a long drive, we ended up at Kollevåg on Askøy in time for the event.

With kids out of the car, we started on the treasure hunt. Equipped with a map which leaded to a series of tasks which again lead to a treasure chest filled with goodies for young and old (also known as candy). After the treasure hunt there were some activities for the kids and an opportunity to enjoy some homemade dinner rolls.

After the pirate day we decided to go for a short drive out to Herdla where we saw a sailing regatta before we headed home … Herdla is definately worth visiting another time. Seems to be a beautiful place!

No bad weather, just bad feather …

Today saw us heading for the mountains (or hills if you like) as the Norwegian Trekking Organization organized their annual “Get Yourself Out Day”. In relation to this the local chapter also organized an event for the children which included birdwatching, canoe paddling, barbeque, blowing soap bubbles, making your own kite and more …

We used the opportunity to take some pictures of our wonderful day in the Bergen mountains. The place where most of the activities took place was at Skomakerdiket (Shoemaker‘s dike).

Summertime, And the livin’ is easy …

Summertime is a time for joy and fun, and this weekend was a weekend like any other … a full schedule from early morning to early evenings (about 6 PM) the whole weekend. The Sunday was kind of planned long time ahead as we wanted to join the Children’s Hike team (Barnas Turlag) at Træet farm.

Træet Gård

Træet Gård

The old farm is situated in the middle on the Osterøy (island) and has been in the Norwegian Trekking Association’s (Den Norske Turistforening) possession for many years.

We left the house around 10 AM, and arrived at Træet at 1130 AM. Driving onto Osterøy we immediately took to the right following the old and winding roads to Bruvik. When I say long and winding I mean loooong and really wiiiinding. Arriving at Hesjedalsbotnen we took to the right and started on the 5 kilometer gravel road towards the farm. Stopping about 500 meters from the farm we walked the rest.

The day was filled with activities for the children as they were able to go fishing, paddling canoes, rowing a boat, go bug hunting (including a small baby snake), walk the slack ropes, go treasure hunting, swinging from the trees, play games and so on. Taking time for some barbecuing as well and the day was a perfect 7 hours end to a weekend with great weather and lots of fun for the kids.
